SCRIPTURE STUDY

PSALM 2 NIV

PLUS MY NOTES

1 Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain?

Somebody's throwing a temper tantrum. The nations of the earth are raging, angry, bitter and now they're conniving, planning, scheming. Do they really think they can have their way against the Lord's way? Futile!

2 The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the LORD and against his anointed, saying,

Sharpening their spears, counting their bullets and bombs. Do they have enough to fight against the Lord and His Chosen One?

3 "Let us break their chains and throw off their shackles."

We are so sick of them being in charge of us. We never get our own way. We've got to come out from under the oppression of God and His people. Let's free ourselves.

4 The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them.

God chuckles at this thought, at these plans so full of self and rebellion. He realizes who's behind it and He begins to laugh wholeheartedly.

5 He rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying,

Then His lauhter turns to anger and His rebuke is mighty. This rebuke will be more then commensurate with their rebellion. Their hearts melt in fear.

6 "I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain."

Then the Lord declares, "I chose who is king! I place him in position! He will rule from my Holy mountain, the place from which I desire that he rule."

7 I will proclaim the LORD's decree: He said to me, "You are my son; today I have become your father.

Then the Father looks at His Son and says, "You are my Son! Today I have become your father. As your daddy, watch what I will do. For my delight is in my son. Not all those who fiercely fought against me putting you in position."

8 Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.

"Now Son, ask of me. Speak your desire. I've installed you to rule. We can expand your Kingdom now. Even ask me for the nations; it pleases me to give it to you."

9 You will break them with a rod of iron; you will dash them to pieces like pottery."

All the dynasties and cultures and systems they have built from hearts full of rebellion against me, you Son, with the way you rule, will bring those smelly nations and systems to a shattered end.

10 Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth.

So, God's voice turns toward those rulers of the earth: "It would be best for you all to get some wisdom. Based on what I just said, things are going to change in your land. I'm going to have my way. I'm warning you.

11 Serve the LORD with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling.

As your God, serve me, and the King I have installed in Zion. Its alright to serve me with some fear in your heart, that'll help keep you in line, keep you from wandering back into your old rebellious ways. You'll come to the place where you'll even be glad about how things go, to the point of rejoicing. But you'll still have that reverence toward me.

12 Kiss his son, or he will be angry and your way will lead to your destruction, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

Yield to my King. Give Him reverence. I have put him in charge and He's willing to use the authority I've given him. You and your ways will be destroyed by him if you decide to cross him. But it will go so well for you, you will be so happy, if you just go with His plan; stick with what I'm having him do. You will be so blessed yielding to His authority.
